Play 4 Peace

Play4Peace Project OverviewThe Play4Peace project was a dynamic and inclusive initiative that spanned 11 months, aimed at uniting youth workers and young people from Kosovo, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Italy. The project focused on promoting peacebuilding and highlighting the essential role that young people play in the reconciliation process. By recognizing the complexities of peacebuilding, Play4Peace used sports and outdoor education as tools to bring youth together, while incorporating traditional youth work methods and the internationally recognized "Do No Harm" peace methodology.

This initiative sought to build the capacities of participating organizations by training youth workers and empowering individuals who are key to shaping the future of young people and their communities.

The first youth worker training took place over four days in North Macedonia, where eight youth workers (two from each country) exchanged knowledge and practical skills. Sports served as a central theme for fostering unity, and time was also dedicated to planning the larger conference in Kosovo, which would focus on the role of young people in peacebuilding.

The project culminated in a five-day camp in Kosovo for 28 young people, aged 18 to 29. The camp featured immersive sports activities, interactive workshops, and discussions on regional challenges. Participants reflected on their role in peacebuilding, both in their communities and beyond. This camp was designed to build bridges through sports and promote effective communication for conflict resolution.

In the final phase, both youth workers and young participants collaborated to create tools for a shared toolbox, designed to continue supporting peacebuilding efforts in the future.

Play for Peace provided a truly unique experience, highlighting the powerful role of sport in cultural understanding. It was eye-opening to discover the surprising similarities we share with the Balkans, reminding me of the universal nature of human connection. Much like the Italians and the passion in everything they do, the initiative reminded me that no matter where we come from, our shared values and the bonds we form through sport can transcend cultural differences and bring us closer together.”

“The activities that we did were based on different sports: basketball, football, and volleyball. We created competitions and exercises that challenged the participants to collaborate between them despite the differences in language and ability. The main idea was to get to know the whole group, engage with all the participants, and promote group skills.

I really enjoyed the fact that the groups were very mixed and that we were able to communicate and interact with all the participants, and not only our with our friends.”
